about

Luke Wood and Bruce Russell made the Visceral Realists album in 2017, originally as a lathe-cut, later reissued by VHF Records from Washington DC. The idea was to improvise over rhythms made by the syncopating run-off grooves of old 45rpm records. Later on Luke organised an expansive survey show of lathe-cut records for a couple of NZ galleries. When it showed at the Dowse Art Museum in early 2020 the band were invited to play their second (or possibly third) live show on 15 Feb 2020. This is the result. Two DJ turntables interjected as the duo wrestled with guitars. It was an afternoon show.

about

Bruce Russell Lyttelton, New Zealand

Bruce Russell is an inveterate improviser and practitioner in sound,. Since 1987 he has been a member of the Dead C. He also performs with Alastair Galbraith as A Handful of Dust (since 1984). His solo guitar practice reconfigures the blues as a form of improvisational auto-destruction.
