1.
The soul is like a drunken man, for the drunk never cares what may befall him.
2.
The law is not imposed on the just, who live without sin.
3.
In what does freedom of spirit consist? It consists in the remorse of conscience ceasing to exist entirely.
4.
In the end everyone will be saved, even the Devil.

about

These solo instrumental tracks were recorded for two ten inch records, both called 'The Movement of the Free Spirit'. They were released in 2000 (on Norway's Smalltown Supersound) and 2013 (on Australia's Spring Press). The first two Movements feature electric guitar and tape loops and were recorded by David Patterson at the Corner Hotel in October 1999. The third and fourth Movements were performed on an open reel tape dictaphone in Jo Burzynska's basement in Lyttelton, shortly after the earthquakes that destroyed most of Christchurch. They were recorded by Malcolm Riddoch.

All four Movements are released together here for the first time.

about

Bruce Russell Lyttelton, New Zealand

Bruce Russell is an inveterate improviser and practitioner in sound,. Since 1987 he has been a member of the Dead C. He also performs with Alastair Galbraith as A Handful of Dust (since 1984). His solo guitar practice reconfigures the blues as a form of improvisational auto-destruction.
