about

An archival excursion, compiling vinyl releases from the late-1990s, never-before available in digital form.

This album was originally released on LP by Siltbreeze in 1998 (tracks 1 & 2). For this digital re-issue I have added a contemporaneous track released on 7" single by Chocolate Monk in 1997. The live side of the album documented an early performance pairing an electric guitar improvisation with a tape loop backing. This kind of work became the basis for the later live album Painting the Passports Brown. On the second track I used a recording of electric guitar made previously by Paul Toohey, layered with a duo percussion improvisation involving me and Tom Lax, the Baron of Siltbreeze, recorded when he was in New Zealand. The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade siren is clearly audible at the start of this track.

The 'extra track' is actually both sides of the single, drawn from a solo improvisation with a pair of toy walkie-talkies placed face to face. Chocolate Monk requested I submit an instrumental solo recording for their 'Cadenza Freedom' series, and this is what I gave them.

These records were acoustically remastered on my home stereo. In other words they are a digital recording of exactly how these records sound when I play them at home. Welcome to my world!

The cover photos were taken by BR in NYC 1991, layout assistance by Nick Cain.

about

Bruce Russell Lyttelton, New Zealand

Bruce Russell is an inveterate improviser and practitioner in sound,. Since 1987 he has been a member of the Dead C. He also performs with Alastair Galbraith as A Handful of Dust (since 1984). His solo guitar practice reconfigures the blues as a form of improvisational auto-destruction.
