about

The Antikythera Mechanism is an object that should not exist, which defies history. Its use is obscure and its provenance is unknown, other than the fact of its having been found in a ship wreck. My album of the same name was released in 2009 by Jeff Burch on his Spring Press label.

All the tracks were recorded in 2009. On 29 August 2009 I played a show at West Space, an arts centre in Melbourne. On one piece I was accompanied by Marco Fusinato. That show was recorded by Philip Samartzis in multi-channel 5.1 sound, this is a stereo mix which Dr Samartzis was kind enough to make me (I doubt I could have persuaded him to mix in mono!). 'Unanimity' was recorded at a disused Masonic Lodge in Lyttelton NZ, 7 June 2009. That show was organised by Jo Burzynska.

For this re-issue I have added a fourth track: 'Mistah Chilton, He Dead', recorded at the High Street Project arts space in Christchurch, in September 2009. At that show I was supporting Bill Orcutt - the high ceilings and wood panelling can clearly be heard in this recording. That building was destroyed in the earthquakes that occurred the following year. This track was previously released by Grapefruit Records on a split LP that I shared with Roy Montgomery.

2009 was, in retrospect, a vintage year, after that things began to slide. we lost Alex Chilton in March 2010, and then in September of that year the earthquakes began. Strange times.

about

Bruce Russell Lyttelton, New Zealand

Bruce Russell is an inveterate improviser and practitioner in sound,. Since 1987 he has been a member of the Dead C. He also performs with Alastair Galbraith as A Handful of Dust (since 1984). His solo guitar practice reconfigures the blues as a form of improvisational auto-destruction.
